About

THE iNDiE MACHiNE is a Toronto-based multimedia music series that strives to find the latest and greatest in indie rock, pop, folk, electronic, and everything in between.
We operate a weekly live radio show, daily music news updates, new music tracks/videos, written/video interviews, album and live music reviews, weekly mixtapes, industry columnists, monthly live music showcases in prominent downtown Toronto locales, and our exclusive video series: sessions and WIRED.
HISTORY:
iM (as we affectionately call it) began as a mixtape series that Toronto native David Marskell would create and pass out amongst friends (possibly because their taste in music wasn’t so hot). In June of 2009, David transferred the iM moniker when he started up a weekly radio show at The University of Toronto Scarborough’s FUSION RADIO.
Timmins-born Ryan Stephenson Price joined the team in March 2010 and cemented the co-hosting duo – paving the way for the future escapades of the iM.
Flash-forward to 2013 and we’re still operating out of bedrooms and coffee shops while we whittle away our time at day jobs, but now we’ve got a few more amazing hands on deck and the website is a heck of a lot prettier.
NAME:
Pundits, journalists and music aficionados alike often refer to “the indie machine” of the collective music industries when discussing those artists not included in the Top 40 selections or grooming processes of the major labels. They of course MIGHT be referring to us … but we’re not so sure about that one … YET!
A single song can be interpreted in so many different ways by each individual who hears it – reflecting the insular nature of music as a medium of expression – thus we feel the truncated “iM” moniker helps reflect that aspect of music as well.
… AND … it rhymes … how awesome is that??!
WHAT’S WITH THE GEARS?:
Gears are obviously an essential component in any mechanical device – ours have 12, 8, and 4 teeth respectively to represent the various iconic musical numbers: 12 semi-tones in an octave, 8 notes in a traditional melodic scale, 4 musical voices (alto, soprano, tenor, bass).
And hey! You know what they say about the squeaky gear/wheel getting the grease; it’s kinda the same thing with journalists and stories. … and besides, what musician doesn’t like musical gear(s)?
WHAT NEXT?:
Since you’re already here, check out our most recent broadcasts in the EPISODES section, or stream some of our latest mixtapes (often curated by some of your favourite artists – including DORA ALEXANDER, TOPANGA, THE DIRTY NIL, DIGITS, FOXES IN FICTION, THE DARCYS, TEEN DAZE, BEND SINISTER, and TOKYO POLICE CLUB).
