ICYMI: THE DIRTY NIL / NORTHERN PRIMITIVE – Split 7″
Dundas ON grunge rock trio THE DIRTY NIL teamed up with Welland ON rock-and-roll trio NORTHERN PRIMITIVE back in January to release the aptly titled The Dirty Nil / Northern Primitive Split 7″ (out January 8th via Indoor Shoes Records)
The lo-fi two-track release has the raw intensity of an off-the-floor single-take jam space audio capture – vocal clips are abundant and the instruments are a little muffled and muddy. While it’s not entirely clear if this is in fact the case behind the recording process, it seems pretty clear that this is what both bands were going for on this release stylistically.
Zombie Eyed – the Side A offering from THE DIRTY NIL – fits in nicely with their previously released material on EPs Fuckin’ Up Young and Little Metal Baby Fist, so if you’re already a fan of THE NIL and their constant rock drive and wailing vocal lines you’ll be plenty satisfied. NORTHERN PRIMITIVE’s contribution – Positive Bondar – comes off like a lo-fi Mogwai-esque sludge rock number: it’s slow and brooding, which is unusual for a band that often comes off as energetic or at least moderately-paced, but it’s still an interestingly fun listen regardless.
