New Release: ROYAL CANOE – Purple & Gold

Picking up essentially where they left off on their early-2012 EP effort Extended Play, Winnipeg’s ROYAL CANOE are in fine – if not slightly unexpected – form with their latest two-track/two-remix offering Purple & Gold.

Rather than the straight-up pop/rock stylings amid the bass-heavy electro-rock productions showcased on its predecessor, Purple & Gold (which you can check out in the embed below) professes a much more subdued feel – instead choosing to push the ambient (and occasionally string-like) synths to the forefront alongside the electronic percussion, multi-part harmony/falsetto combos, and a handful of bass licks so slick they’ll surely form the groundwork for your next bedroom soundtrack.

For when you’re sleeping… perv.

With a full-length LP supposedly on the horizon, it’ll be interesting to see how this RADIOHEAD/MICHAEL JACKSON-evoking material and the earlier Extended Play get worked into the mix (or ignored altogether for entirely new material). That being said, this new direction will definitely change their live show from being a complete energetic dance party (which it definitely is) to having more lounge-y groove dips to help switch things up from song-to-song.

In other news, ROYAL CANOE are hitting the road on a West Coast Tour, with a brief period in Alberta before switching coasts altogether for an East Coast run – see tour dates below.
