Band Watch: REBEL REBEL
They may or may not actually be named for the DAVID BOWIE song of the same name, but September 2012 iM Featured Artist REBEL REBEL have a certain flair for the live performance side of things (though maybe not really as theatrical as BOWIE).
Following up on their precursor act THE LASTING EFFECT, Toronto indie rock quintet REBEL REBEL came into being back in fall 2011, with guitarist/vocalist Travis Caine, keyboardist/vocalist Kara Gauthier, guitarist/vocalist Bryan Wyshnicki, bassist Tye Hunt Fitzgerald, and drummer Paul Cope striving for an energetic live offering that encourages their eager audience to spread musical dissent like the band’s namesake.
REBEL REBEL subscribes to the K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple, Stupid) school of songwriting – preferring to graft contemporary synth layers and indie experimentation around a core rock-and-roll (and punk rock-tinged) throwback vibe – counting FOO FIGHTERS, PEARL JAM, WILCO, THE CONSTANTINES, NEIL YOUNG, and TOM PETTY among their influences.
The band is set to drop their debut EP Be Heard on Sept. 22nd at The Silver Dollar with MITTENZ and THE LOST BABIES in tow, with the band currently teasing the first single I Know (What You Mean) in the video below.
Until you can listen to it in all its sure-to-be splendour, check out that track (and a handful of others) in the live-off-the-floor Official Bootleg #002 from their June 2012 Horseshoe Tavern performance in the embed below to get an idea of what you can expect from REBEL REBEL going forward.
