7-Day Mixtape: Vol. 53 – POOR YOUNG THINGS
Thunder Bay five-piece pop-rock outfit POOR YOUNG THINGS may just be a bunch of guys from Northern Ontario, but with their debut EP Let It Sleep – produced by Jon Drew (Arkells) – released in January via Bumstead Records, and an impending debut full-length set to drop later this year, they’re well on their way to being a household name.
In the meantime they’re currently on their way out to Vancouver (probably in a van in the prairies at this point) to meet up with Canadian rock quartet THE TREWS for a trek back east on a Western Canada tour throughout the month of March. (see full schedule below)
The iM caught up with the gang at their recent Horseshoe Tavern outing (more on that later), and convinced them to take some time out of their busy schedule to curate the latest 7-Day Mixtape!
Check out some of the Canadian rock that has influenced the band over the years in the player below – be sure to hit up POOR YOUNG THINGS at the following links so you can keep tabs on when they’re rolling through your town.
THE SUPER FRIENDZ – Karate Man
Matt: Hit the week running! I remember watching the video on The Wedge when I was younger. You can’t even find it anymore. The band was fronted by Matt Murphy, who would later become Canada’s greatest export, GUY TERRIFICO.
SLOAN – Coax Me
Scott: When it comes to Canadian rock and roll, one of the first bands that always comes to mind is SLOAN. What’s not to love about four guys that each write songs? They have a huge vault of singles that cruised to the top of Canadian charts, and a ton of amazing songs in their back catalog. “Coax Me” is one of their singles, but it is a lesser known one – if you get the chance to check out the video, it’s great as well.
RUSTY – Empty Cell
Konrad: I failed to see these guys return at their sold out NXNE gig last summer, but with the slew of 90s rock bands reuniting for upcoming festivals, these guys stick out. The video is kicking around somewhere on the net – take advantage for full nostalgia effect.
THE AGE OF ELECTRIC – Ugly
Mike: Probably one of my most favourite songs, plus it’s Canadian. Too bad I was only around seven when these guys were in their prime, I would’ve liked to see them live.
HAYDEN – Bad As They Seem
Matt: One of Canada’s great singer/songwriter troubadours. Reminds me of when music stations played music.
THE TRAGICALLY HIP – Long Time Running
Dave: A slow blues burner with lots of soul. Gord was digging deep on this one.
MATTHEW GOOD BAND – Generation X-Wing
Scott: From the Raygun EP – Matt and I used to cover this one back in highschool. Brings back memories of dirty garages and backpacks full of beer.
