Concert Review: THE CHEAP SPEAKERS – Rancho Relaxo (06-16-11) NXNE
There’s something about The Cheap Speakers that just makes you want to dance. They aren’t the most lively bunch when they perform, however, the music they create gets under your skin, evokes emotion and you just can’t help bobbing your head to the beat.
I caught their show at Rancho Relaxo during NXNE where they played a great set to a very sweaty crowd. For some reason I felt like I was back in the 90s, maybe it was the slight garage/grunge sound coming through the speakers – with songs See Your Life, A Sign That You Don’t Care and one of my favourites Speak – maybe it was the way they were dressed, maybe it was the alcohol. Regardless, we all got a little carried away and this was a good thing.
Lead singer Brennan was definitely one of those people, almost knocking his mic stand over, and I’m pretty sure he collided with guitarist Natalia and threw her off for a chord or two. In his defense, the stage at Rancho is not the largest and having 4 people up there with full gear doesn’t allow for much moving around room.
I’m going to end this off by saying that The Cheap Speakers are great. They play with smiles on their faces and those smiles come through in their music. They have another show coming up in the next week or so at Sneaky Dee’s where they play with HotKid, another great act. Get out or miss out!
